Cosplay fun, tech-inspired art
TAVES Consumer Electronics Show will feature Halloween-themed “cosplay” this year, as this three-day event takes place over All Hallows Eve weekend.

Called “CAGE (Cosplay / Artists / Gamers / Emerge),” TAVES attendees are encouraged to join fellow cosplayers and dress as their favourite character from video games, comic books, sci-fi movies, and more. Prizes for the best cosplay will be awarded each of the three-day show. Developed in partnership with ventureLAB and Markham Public Library, CAGE will be equipped with a photo booth, 3D-printed accessories and mini trivia contests throughout the weekend.

In fact, TAVES attendees are encouraged to make their own accessories leading up to the event – in 3D, no less. On October 22, the Markham Public Library Cornell Branch will be hosting a Mini Maker Expo from 4pm to 6pm, where participants can meet real makers and try out their own creations. Note: The 3D printers at Cornell Library are open to the public any time during library hours, and you are encouraged to create your own costume and accessories for TAVES.

For more information on the 3D printers, contact the Markham Public Library at 905-513-7977.

Speaking of self-expression, returning from last year’s show is the tech-inspired Jolt! Art Gallery, with new additions added to the more than 100 pieces of art on display – ranging from paintings to photography to sculptures – and prominently displayed throughout the main TAVES showroom floor.

For the kids
For the first time this fall, TAVES Consumer Electronics Show will feature a series of seminars and workshops – many designed for younger attendees and with a strong focus on STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

Presented by the Logics Academy, this year’s show includes eight 2-hour workshops on Saturday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 1, for kids aged between 6 and 13. Each of these workshops teaches kids robotics fundamentals, while guiding them through the process of building a take-home robot. These include: Programming Adventures, Robot Jousting, Doodlebot, Bumble Bee (Musical Pencil), Robot Olympics, Jump Into Jade, Talkbot and Bump Bot.

While kids can participate in one or more of these workshops, parents can explore the show floor to kick the tires on the latest technology. For more info on these workshops and to register your child, please go to www.taveshow.com and click on the blue “Robotics Workshop for Kids” tile on the home page. Seating is limited.

For kids age 7 through 17, CoderDojo Markham – a local meetup that introduces youth to the world of computer programming – will host their monthly meeting at the TAVES Consumer Electronics Show on Sunday, November 1 from 1pm to 3pm, and all who attend the show are invited to join them. Supported by a team of mentors and volunteers with computer programming experience, kids (and kids at heart) can learn about coding in a fun and relaxed setting.

As you can see, TAVES Consumer Electronics Show is bigger and better than ever before — covering more space, a greater variety of products, and with meetups, seminars, panels, and interactive workshops.

Hope to see you — and your friends, family, or coworkers — at this year’s show from Oct. 30 through Nov. 1, in Richmond Hill. For more information and to pick up your tickets, visit www.taveshow.com.
