Offering a variety of classes held on school PD days, weekends, over March Break, and through the summer, Brick Works uses LEGO and Minecraft to teach robotics, stop-motion animation, and other skills to children aged 8 and up. They also hold workshops directly in classrooms. For 2017, they are expanding from their home base of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario to sites in Toronto, Guelph, Hamilton, Oakville, and Mississauga.
Logics Academy – www.LogicsAcademy.com
With their “Dash”, “Dot”, and “mBot” kits, Logics Academy runs robotics programs for various school boards across the region. Logics Academy has a full range of evening and weekend workshops, March break and summer camps, lunchtime and after-school programs, as well as professional development initiatives for educators to bring STEM curriculum to their students. Logics Academy ran a series of robotics workshops for kids at this year’s TAVES.
Makerwiz – www.Makerwiz.com
This organization supports various maker spaces around the Greater Toronto Area, distributes 3D printing products, and runs courses to teach CAD and 3D printing. They also organize various makerfest events and were 3D scanning showgoers, printing out mini-replicas, at this year’s show.
Mimetics – www.Mimetics.ca
Creators of the Jade Robot, which was successfully crowdfunded, Mimetics uses the Jade Robot to teach kids robotics through its easy-to-use onboard graphical programming interface on a tablet, negating the need for a separate laptop or computer. Programs can be instantly executed by the robot once programmed and Mimetics has a whole robotics curriculum built around the Jade Robot.
New Life Robotics – www.NewLifeRobotics.com
Utilizing the 22” tall, 12 lbs NAO robot and with curriculum spanning all grades, New Life Robotics aims to integrate robotics into the Canadian education system. The NAO robot is capable of text-to-speech in multiple languages, can walk around using cameras and sensors to avoid obstacles, and can be controlled via voice commands. Its intuitive graphical interface for programming allows students to manipulate and control the robot via drag-and-drop, working their way up to coding in later advanced lessons.
NewMakeIt – www.NewMakeIt.com
Located in Newmarket, NewMakeIt is a non-profit collaborative space, that provides numerous services and equipment for makers, inventors, and anyone curious to explore access to a wide variety of equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNCs, woodworking lathes, and metalwork presses. The space is sponsored by various levels of government and runs workshops and events.
STEM Minds – www.stemminds.com
Partnered with NewMakeIt, STEM Minds runs a wide variety of programs for children aged 5 to 14. They offer in-class instruction, summer camps, after-school clubs, March break programs, and even custom programs for birthday parties. The run these programs at various locations in Aurora, Newmarket, Markham, and Richmond Hill.
Transportation
ecoRIDES – www.ecoRIDES.com
Currently piloting in Hamilton, Ontario, this ride-hailing service’s aim is to provide sustainable, zero-emissions transportation with their fleet of Tesla Model S cars. They are set to expand to Toronto, Niagara Falls, and Los Angeles, California in the coming year.
Go Tours Canada, Segway of Ontario – www.GoToursCanada.com, www.SegwayOfOntario.com
Operating out of the historic Distillery District in downtown Toronto, Go Tours is partnered with Segway of Ontario to offer Segway tours of the district complete with tastings. They also distribute the smaller Segway MiniPro, a cheaper version that capable of speeds of 16 km/hr with a range of 22 km. Partnering with Go Virtual Media, they’re also bring these tours of Toronto to VR, allowing international visitors to experience them without having to make the trip to Canada.
Plug’n’Drive – www.PlugnDrive.ca
This non-profit’s mission is to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in Canada. They hold various outreach events, provide materials for homeowners and property managers, lobby politically, publish research about electric vehicles, and provide consultation services regarding electric vehicles. At TAVES, they had numerous electric vehicles on the show floor and even a few models available for test drives outside the hotel.

This dealership was at the show beside Plug’n’Drive showcasing their newest offerings including the S90 sedan and XC90 plug-in hybrid SUV which offers up to 22 km of all-electric range. Volvo is known for their leading-edge safety systems and these vehicles are no exception offering the latest features such as “City Safety” which detects pedestrians and cyclists, whiplash protection for collisions, and intersection braking that detects oncoming traffic when making left turns.
